Well pop my Monocle!

current mood: cynical
current song: Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails

Opie and Anthony are being completely misogynistic assh*les? Say it aint so!

At least they didn't call Condi "nappy headed" or else they would have really been in trouble!

And to think I used to listen to them religiously, even getting upset when they got kicked off the air after the Sex for Sam stunt at St. Pat's.

I started listening to them after I "outgrew" Howard Stern but stopped listening to them after their suspension. Jose and my sister got me a XM system for Christmas several years ago so I started listening to them again, but that lasted about six months before I cancelled the subscription and put away the XM.

Jose hates talk radio and never understood why I listened to them to begin with. I can't listen to them at all now. All the stories and the jokes now just come off to me as privledged male-speak. It doesn't suprise me that they did the skit that they did. It suprises me even less that I think I saw only one newspaper cover the story while people couldn't stop talking about Don Imus for a couple of weeks.

Well, they were only "joking" about women being raped to death. Can't you take a joke?

Yeah. Rape. Hysterical.

While we were in Miami, we caught Carlos Mencia on the TV. I used to think the man was really funny now he's another comedian I can't listen to anymore. He talks about words only having the power you give it but I just don't buy it. People died over certain words. Women live in fear because of certain words. There is actual violence because of certain words. Don't tell me it's all in my head. And yes, I DO mind if a complete stranger calls me a bitch, or a whore or any of those other endearing terms even if they don't mean me personally. My gender is not a coatrack for YOUR issues.

After Don Imus was fired, I saw an ad for a reality show featuring Andrew Dice Clay. I had to stop. All the hoopla over Don Imus and ANDREW DICE CLAY IS GETTING HIS OWN TV SHOW. Are we seeing the irony here?

So, have I become just another humorless feminist or were the jokes just not funny to begin with and only now I'm catching on?

And don't even get me started on this. I'll be the first to say that mainstream comics is a resentful little boys club upset at having to share their space with the cootie carriers but I really hate being reminded of it. I'm suprised they didn't try for the full trifecta of ass, boobs, and muff (And I don't care that Adam Hughes did the original artwork - it still stinks). Maybe it's because they're "classy" unlike other comic creators. Click on the thumbnails. I dare you.

And don't even begin to think there's no connection between the top part of this post and the bottom.

Howard

The important thing to remember here is that Opie & Anthony and Don Imus are stupid. They're trying to duplicate what Howard Stern is doing without really understanding what he does. They think being obnoxious and offensive for the sake of being obnoxious and offensive is enough.

If you've listened to Howard you know that while he does objectify women, there's no underlying malice or hatred (to women in general. He does have some specific women he hates.) And thinking about it, the worse tortures and humiliations are directed at his male staff members. I'd describe him much more as a misanthrope than any sort of misogynist.

And for the record, I find Andrew Dice Clay one of the most annoying human beings on the planet. I'd rather stare at a blank wall than watch his show, which I doupt will last long.

Thinking

The last time I listened to Howard was sometime after the "Private Parts" movie came out. And misanthropic is the perfect description of him.

Thinking back to when I was listening to him, I'm realizing that yes, he was always obsessed about his female guests and always asked inappropriate questions but I don't remember him demanding anything from them. He was more goofy than anything - like he couldn't believe these women would actually come onto the show to talk to him!

O&A won't even allow any woman to enter their studio unless she gets naked or does something sexual. One of the other reasons I stopped listening to O&A is that they wouldn't. stop. complaining. about. him. Okay! We get it, you hate Howard! Let it go!

I'm still pretty glad I don't have XM anymore, although I can't listen to Howard either, but that's more personal preference than anything specific he did.

Phil Hendrie returning is the only thing that will get me listening to entertainment radio again, either through the airwaves or on a subscription service. I still have a subscription to his site and it'll be a sad day for me when I've finally listened to every past show that I missed when he was on the radio. I'm a huge audio addict, as it's the one thing that can keep my mind stimulated while not having to look up from the drawing board.

Also, at the risk of stepping in it: As someone who makes his living illustrating things designed to appeal to base sexual emotions and fantasies, I will draw a distinction between that, and tasteless misogyny. It may be idealized (male and female) beauty, but I'm certain the intentions aren't to be harmful or degrading. I know this because I know my motives. It isn't to insult or alienate by way of comparison. I feel confident that the fairly high number of female names in my website's subscription registry aren't self-hating women.

I don't care much for shock jocks, nor do I care for shock humorist. I guess if you ain't good in creating a joke, use a little stupidity mixed with bit of vile hate? I miss my collage Wendsday nights for it was comedian night, good straight humor. As for Mary Jane, American comics and Japanese Magma don't mix, knock it off Marvel. Gesh, also look at her long legs, and if your trying to emulate something, use black tentacles coming from the basket, oh wait that's henti.... Seriously, I think she should be in a different pose, do your own Laundry peter, I do!

Eh, c'mon, it's no surprise that Marvel (and DC) built its fortune out of pandering power fantasies and softcore erotica to male teens and pre-teens. I suppose I'm one of those sickos who dropped both companies because I got tired of reading bad WRITING.

Writing? Who cares? Cinch Storm's waist down another notch! Last I saw a cover with her on it, she had a waist barely wide enough for a spine and colon to fit through. And that's NOT an exaggeration. And it was about a decade ago.

One issue I'd take, Daphne, is that this isn't because males in the comic industry feel "threatened" by women and have some need to "reduce" them in any way. The simple fact is that they lust after the female body and want to fulfill fantasies about ridiculous proportions and clothing that would asphyxiate a real person.

This is what blows guys' minds about gals reading comics. They leap to the conclusion that women are reading them for the SAME reasons they do.

This is really going to annoy you...remember 16 year old Supergirl? She's still 16, but I guess that 16 is legal in the minds of the fanboy-insane.

Annoyed

Who buys these things?

It looks like they tried to go for an anime look but used a porn DVD for reference. And so many people were complaining about the Japanese DC figures - hey look, it really could be worse!

Her hip bones frighten me.

Hell, even porn does a better job treating women as people than your typical spandex junkie publication. In porn, everybody is a slut. o_O

As for who buys those statues, you know the answer to that already.

I haven't listened to commercial radio in ages, and rants like this continue to remind me that I made the right choice.
